Muhwezi Nicholas

My name is Muhwezi Nicholas, I come from Kanungu district. I graduated from Busitema University with a bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness.
My life journey transformation started when FAWE Uganda took us through the Extended Orientation Program (EOP) hosted at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) for two weeks. This formed the foundation of everything in me.  Topics in leadership skills, entrepreneurship, ICT skills, financial management, stress management and adapting to campus life have had a positive change in my life. I acquired these skills and put them into practice immediately, as a result, I have registered a number of milestones today.
For instance, my entrepreneurship journey started immediately after attending the EOP Program at University. I have run different enterprises to raise income. In my year one I started with piggery and turkey projects which only required me to feed in the morning and evening hence giving me time to concentrate on my academics.
The allowances I got from my leadership positions while at school and the savings from the piggery and turkey business; I invested in purchasing a second-hand motorcycle (which I am using as a transport means to ride people (Boda Boda business) where I earn UGX.60,000/=  per week.

The motorcycle transport business worked for a profitably period of two years where I was able to save UGX. 2,000,000/=. Later on, I sold the motor bicycle at UGX. 1,600,000/= and raised a total of UGX. 3,600,000/= altogether.
Having realized that it was a profitable business, I decided to reinvest the money and some additions in another project and procured a brand new motorbike at the sum of UGX. 4, 600, 000/= and the machine is currently making money during this COVID 19 pandemic period. In the beginning, it was challenging to balance academics, leadership and entrepreneurship; at the same time; as a result, I decided to run projects that required minimal supervision in order to create more time for my academics.
The entrepreneurship skills have been key in my life and have motivated me to further my journey in entrepreneurship even after campus. I am passionate about it because I am able to earn extra income to support myself, and my family back home whenever the need arises as well as create employment for other people in my community. Currently, I am already employing one person who is riding a motorcycle and this enables him to support his family too.
Besides entrepreneurship, I have been greatly successful in the field of leadership. At Busitema University, I was elected the Students Representative, where I served for a period of 3 years 2017 – 2020.
This position enabled me to practice my leadership skills, gained more confidence, and was able to take up other University leadership placements right from year one to three. For instance, I was the Gender and Culture Secretary at Busitema University Arapai Campus from 2018 – 2019, Assistant Speaker Busitema University Western Uganda Students Association, Minister of Transport, Welfare and Publicity 2019 -2020, Assistant Speaker and Project Manager at Busitema University Western Uganda Students Association.
The leadership experience has built my awareness and innovativeness to think of potential problems that could arise and design possible solutions to combat them in the case that they occur, enabled me to learn new things and management of new challenges, and helped me develop a sense of responsibility in managing both group dynamics and accomplishment of projects, built my confidence, improved my networking abilities and management of pressure as I served in the top position in the Students Guild council. As a result of my leadership trial, FAWE Uganda awarded me a Certificate of Appreciation and this gave me the impetus to work hard.
I, therefore, thank FAWE Uganda and the MasterCard foundation for the great support rendered to me to further my education. Without them, I wouldn’t have reached where I am today.
